Caring for your babyʼs umbilical cord

So, finally your wait of nine months is over and you are happy with your baby but at the same time worried about how to care for your babyʼs umbilical cord? This part that connects the baby with the mother when he is still in the womb remains there for some weeks even after birth. Following are some simple ways by which you can heal the left over part of the umbilical cord also known as, the stump.

First of all, you should know how to clean the stump. When you that the stump of the umbilical cord is dirty and sticky, try cleaning it gently with a slightly damp cloth. Remember, the stump will fall off naturally, so donʼt try to pull it yourself, else it may cause pain and infection to the newborn baby.

Drying the stump is very important, so try to keep it dry as much as possible for a quick healing. You can also expose it to air and make sure to change the diapers quickly else wet diapers in order to avoid the stump from getting wet. The umbilical cord or the stump remains only for 2 to 3 weeks, so during this time, try to give your baby sponge bath so that the stump remains dry and falls off soon.
