It is also useful to maintain a meal plan as it helps the kids to eat right and stay hale and hearty. In general, a meal plan only gives you an idea of the food groups that you can eat and tells you when to eat them. They give more of general information and would rarely tell you exactly what to eat.

There are different types of meal plans that you can try on your kids with diabetes. There are some which focus only on carbohydrates. However, the exchange meal plan focuses not only on carbohydrates but also on proteins and fats. The meal plan has as many as six different categories of food. The constant carbohydrates meal plan lets the parents use a certain amount of carbohydrates in their kids’ meal and can use food labels to make sure their kids stay on track.

Food labels lets the parents know the amount of sodium which is present in the food. This helps kids with diabetes and high blood pressure because excess intake of salt can make blood pressure problems even worse. Food labels also have information related to the quantity of fat, its type and total calories that is present in the food. So, your doctor or the health care team is the best people to decide what plan your kid should follow.
